Window Energy Ratings? / Exchangeability?

Any comments about the Window Energy Rating Scheme and its impact on the industry?

How do you feel about exchangeability of products deemed as 'similar' being permitted in the Window Energy Rating Scheme as they are within EN1279 standards so that window companies and sealed unit manufacturers are not bound to specific brands of a product?

I have already made my view clear on this blog some time ago. I am left wondering though if anyone invovled in implementing the WERs actual reads the views of the businesses they are looking to close down. Are we all wasting our time here. Also I am yet to find anyone in any organisation that is able to answer the simpliest question about WERs other than if they think they will get rich or go bust. We all know that answer from the BFRC directors and they don't care about the rest of us.

Its been very interesting reading the comments on this message board and yes I believe the changes to document L this october will be the most difficult the ig industry will experience, I still believe that the WER scheme will ultimately be a good thing for our industry unfortunately there will be casualties who have not invested time and money into their business to be fully compliant. I just hope many issues like exchangability and being able to supply customers who buy frames in from one company and their units from another will still be able to do so with relative ease, and some control must be handed back to the sealed unit manufacturer, hopefully these points will be resolved in the coming months until they have I must carry on making several combinations of sealed units.

I'm totally sick of the "old boys club " telling us what we can and can't do , I have lost a Synseal 25k/ month account because my sealed units using Thermix bar didn't perform as good as a sealed unit manufactured with swiss v . I WILL NOT be told which products i have to buy , and from whom , The preferd product for a Syseal frame is Edge tech , now there's a suprise .

Attended the 'Journey to C' WER seminar at Lancashire Cricket Club on Thursday, didn't really learn a great deal than i already knew, the WER scheme in principal is good but the lack of flexibility makes it pretty much a complete and utter nightmare for IG manufacturers, i still cannot comprehend why a frame with a WER of C that has a simulated unit configuration of lets say K'Glass with a warm edge space bar and argon gas cannot then take a unit with a much higher specification of lets say Planitherm/Super Spacer+Argon/Low Iron glass and not be able to officialy have the same rating without performing another simulation.

The only real answer i attained from the seminar was that regardless of sceptisism and anger towards the scheme it is coming and coming soon, get yourselves geared up my friends and prepare in full, hold on tight because the ride will only get faster. On a positive note my friends recall the days when EN1279 was talked of and the fear that spread throughout the industry, everyody in general kaiboshed the idea that all future units would be made using one pane of Low E, we all pretty much cringed at the thought of this but a few years on and its second nature to us all regardless of company size, we will get through the WER scheme as well unfortunately with casualties.

Listening to the representative of the GGF (Giles cant think of his surname) speaking, was interesting especially when he said that the window/IG industry had received high praise from government for our contribution to the economy and environment, why then have we been kicked in the proverbials by forcing the scheme on us rather than consulting us and asking the people who work the industry about there views?

I trust that when Mr Brown or Mr Cameron (is there any difference) speak at Kyoto to tell the delegates how this WER scheme has reduced the Carbon footprint of the UK they will continue to tell them of the numbers of businesses that have folded because of the financial implications and difficulty of the scheme and of the mass increase to the dole queue of fabricators etc from IG/Window companies? Somehow i doubt it.
